You’ve found the horse of your dreams—congratulations! Before you sign a sales contract and take him home, it is important to do a prepurchase exam. This exam will inform you of the horse’s current condition and suitability for your intended use. It will give you an idea of the potential maintenance work needed to keep the horse sound and healthy, and it will give you a snapshot of the horse’s current condition which is useful down the road.
We will examine overall health, including health history, temperature, pulse, respiration, general condition, and confirmation. We will do a thorough lameness evaluation including flexion tests, soft tissue palpation, and movement evaluation. If desired, we can provide special diagnostics such as radiographs and ultrasound, as well as blood tests.
Before your prepurchase exam, ask yourself the following questions:
- What do I want to use this horse for?
- Have I spotted any issues of concern during earlier visits with this horse?
- What management issues, if any, am I willing to deal with?
- What are “deal-breaker” issues for me?
