A true, unfortunately story: this past weekend, a horseback rider in Chatfield State Park stepped off the path into the long grass to let a runner pass by, and the horse was bitten in the leg by the rattlesnake.
What can you do?
- Ride on mowed areas so you and horses can clearly see a snake
- After a bite, get veterinary attention immediately
- Stay out of the sun
- Wash the area with iodine if your horse will allow it
You can read more about snakebites on horses from the AAEP website.
