Rattlesnakes, A Serious Threat

A true, unfortunately story: this past weekend, a horseback rider in Chatfield State Park stepped off the path into the long grass to let a runner pass by, and the horse was bitten in the leg by the rattlesnake.

What can you do?

  1.  Ride on mowed areas so you and horses can clearly see a snake
  2. After a bite, get veterinary attention immediately
  3. Stay out of the sun
  4. Wash the area with iodine if your horse will allow it

You can read more about snakebites on horses from the AAEP website.
